Chicken of the Woods

Did you ever see anything like this????  Its huge – about 3ft across

Chicken of the Woods Laetiporus sulphureus

Chicken of the Woods Laetiporus sulphureus

Its a kind of fungi and is edible – apparently it has the texture and flavour of chicken, hence its name, but it won’t be me checking if this is true!  (My bible says it can cause gastric upset so sample with care).

Lots more watercolours of fungi in An Illustrated Country Year – 26 days to publication. Here is a page full:

  1. A beautiful fungus. With all our recent rain we only have to look to see some interesting varieties. I have seen tree fungus here but it is puffy looking, also huge. I once saw a puffball as big as a basketball.

  2. It looks as though its going to be a bumper year for fungi. We have lots in our woods already (although non as spectacular as this) and we’ve had some of the best fairy rings in our lawns I think I’ve ever seen.
